FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
When should my child go to the dentist for the first time? It's normal to go when the child turns one year old for a checkup to make sure everything is okay. Pediatricians don't usually focus on teething, so it's important to take your child to a pediatric dentist as well.
How often should we go to the dentist? From the first year of life, ideally, a check-up should be scheduled annually. Once all the teeth have erupted, around age three, a check-up should be scheduled every six months. This ensures everything is alright and helps children become accustomed to the pediatric dentist from infancy.
When should I start brushing my child's teeth? We should start brushing them as soon as the teeth appear, and even before they erupt we can get the child used to having their gums cleaned with a gauze pad.
Why is it necessary to brush baby teeth if they aren't permanent? Because even though they are baby teeth, they can suffer damage such as cavities, wear, or fractures. Because it's important to establish good oral hygiene habits from a young age.
How often should my child brush their teeth? For how long? Ideally, after every meal, whether it's liquid or solid. If that's not possible, then at least after every meal. Brushing should last at least 2 minutes.
Which toothpaste should I use? Ideally, use a fluoridated toothpaste with a pleasant flavor. Brushing three times a day helps increase fluoride absorption, which strengthens teeth and removes plaque. Be careful with the amount of fluoride used for children; these are the recommendations: a maximum of 500 ppm of fluoride for children aged 2 to 6 years, and a maximum of 1450 ppm of fluoride for children aged 7 to 12 years. However, if you have any questions, your pharmacist will be able to advise you.
Which toothbrush should I use? We should use a special toothbrush for children. These have a smaller head to reach all areas, softer and shorter bristles, and a wider, rounded handle for easier gripping. Most also come with colorful designs, cartoon characters, and other fun features.
Electric or manual toothbrush? An electric toothbrush is ideal for children, as it applies the right pressure, preventing them from brushing too hard and hurting themselves or too gently. However, it's still the parents' responsibility to supervise and adjust the brushing.
Flossing: yes or no? Flossing: yes, always! Children have physiological spaces between their teeth called primate spaces. It's essential to floss these spaces after meals.
