FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

When should my child see the dentist for the first time? Typically, a child should go to the dentist when they turn one for a checkup to make sure everything is okay. Pediatricians don't usually pay attention to teeth, so it's important to take your child to the pediatric dentist as well.

How often should we go to the dentist? Starting at age 1, the ideal is to have a checkup every year, when teething is complete, that is, around age 3, and every six months. This is to ensure everything is in order and to help children become accustomed to seeing a pediatric dentist from infancy.

When should I start brushing their teeth? We should start brushing them as soon as their teeth come in. Even before they erupt, we can get the child used to cleaning their gums with a gauze.

Why is it necessary to brush baby teeth if they aren't permanent? Because even if they are baby teeth, they can suffer injuries such as cavities, wear, or fractures. Because it's important to establish good oral hygiene habits from a young age.

How often should my child brush their teeth? For how long? Ideally, brush after every meal, whether liquid or solid. If this isn't possible, brush at least after every other meal. Brushing should last at least two minutes.

Which toothpaste should I use? Ideally, use a pleasant-tasting fluoride toothpaste. Brushing three times a day helps increase the amount of fluoride, which strengthens teeth and removes plaque. Be careful with the amount of fluoride applied to children. These are the recommendations: a maximum of 500 ppm of fluoride for children 2 to 6 years old. A maximum of 1450 ppm of fluoride for children 7 to 12 years old. However, if you have any questions, your pharmacist will be able to advise you.

Which toothbrush should I use? We should use a special toothbrush for children. They have a smaller head so they can reach all areas, the bristles are softer and shorter, and the handle is usually wider and rounded so they're easier to hold. Plus, most have colorful designs, dolls, and more.

Electric or manual toothbrush? An electric toothbrush is ideal for children, as it provides the right amount of pressure, preventing children from applying pressure that could cause injury or from brushing too gently. In any case, it's the parents' responsibility to supervise and adjust the brushing.

Flossing, yes or no? Flossing, yes, always! Children have physiological spaces between their teeth called primate spaces. It's essential to floss these spaces after meals.
